    History of Omega 3

In the early 1970s, the Inuit of Greenland had a low incidence of heart disease and had low levels of blood cholesterol or triglyceride levels although their diet did not include any vegetables. Their diet comprised mostly of seal and whale meat and blue-backed fish. However, in 1988, a Danish medical researcher reported that when they moved to Denmark and got assimilated to the Danish cuisine, they experienced a rising incidence of heart disease to the level similar to that in the Danish population. In 1982 and 1989 studies reported that the secret to the longevity of the Japanese people was a diet rich in various fish, rapeseed oil and soy. After such reports, it became common knowledge that omega 3 is a very healthy substance. Ingesting omega 3 with the correct knowledge of its usage and precautions would be very helpful to staying healthy.

    Benefits of Omega3

    Prevention of hyperlipidemiaand vascular diseases

Omega3 lowers blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels. It prevents platelets from adhering to the vascular wall (coagulation) to avoid formation of thrombus. It protects against vascular damage and improves arterial elasticity to alleviate the symptoms of hypertension and atherosclerosis as well as improve circulation. Taking aspirin everyday helps prevent thrombosis and reduce cardiac inflammation as well as prevent cardiovascular events. However, aspirin may cause a serious side effect of gastric bleeding, whereas omega3does not.

Omega 3 can also help prevent sudden death by preventing malignant arrhythmia. Omega 3 is thought to reduce cardiovascular death by preventing malignant arrhythmia and platelet aggregation.

    Liver protection

The omega3 fatty acid protects against fat-related liver damage and insulin resistance. In a rat study, Dr. Juan Clara of University of Barcelona, Spain found that protectins and resorbins inomega3 inhibit obesity-related fatty liver and insulin resistance. Omega 3 also improves blood circulation of the liver and normalizes hepatic fat metabolism and inhibits accumulation of cholesterol and triglycerides in the liver tissue.

    Prevention of diabetes

Omega 3 is known to prevent type 1 diabetes (in the pediatric population). A research team at University of Colorado in the United States examined the eating habits of 1,700 children with genetic predisposition for type 1 diabetes and found thatthose with a diet rich in omega3 had a 55% lower risk of forming antibodies that destroy insulin. Omega 3 helps treatment of diabetes by normalizing insulin production by beta cells in the pancreas.
