    Digital Machine Device

The initial type of machine devices was used mainly by connecting a handpiece and a punch tip to a dental grinder. The initial type was so simple that it could control only revolution per minute (RPM).

However, machine devices have recently evolved to be more precise enough to have a digital system where RPM of punch, direction of oscillation movement, and even calculation of hair follicle count can be controlled.

    Punch Tip

For FUE sampling, it is important to properly choose a punch tip as a tool used to transect the area around a hair follicle by being connected to a handpiece.

The types of punch tips are various but can be largely divided into sharp punches and dull punches. Sharp punches can easily penetrate the skin as the name suggests but is highly likely to damage (transect) a hair follicle due to the sharp end face of the punch during the extraction process.

Therefore, if the surgeon is unacquainted with the use of the device, it would be better to choose a large-diameter punch for a thin punching. Dull punches require more strength and time to penetrate the skin but is less likely to damage a hair follicle. Also, it is important to choose an appropriate punch depending on operation plan, sampling quantity, and the surgeon's skill.

    Preoperative Preparation

For an easier FUE sampling, it is advised to shave the back of the head, from which a sample will be taken, prior to a transplant operation. Otherwise, the surrounding long hair may get tangled into a punch tip rotating rapidly like a drill.

The larger the sampling quantity, the wider the scope to be shaped at the back of the head. Patients should be well informed of this prior to surgery. Since the shaved head, though it is partial, is a sensitive issue for Korean men who usually maintain a short, neat hairstyle because it may make a trace of surgery easily visible.
