• #5-1. Gender Differences of Beauty

In this article, I would like to discuss what different facial features exist in attractive faces according to gender.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), 1.1 million men received plastic surgery in 2010 in the US. In particular, rhinoplasty, blepharoplasty, liposuction, correction for gynecomastia, and face lift were the most frequently performed aesthetic plastic surgical procedures in men in 2012. 1 The table below shows ASPS’s statistics on types of plastic surgery carried out in both men and women in 2012.2

The theme about the aesthetic differences between attractive male and female faces has become more important as more men are undergoing plastic surgery to improve their looks. Steven Tyler, the lead singer of a famous American rock band ‘Aerosmith’, received a lot of media attention for his unnatural, effeminized appearance due to excessive cosmetic surgery. 3

Such undesirable change in the appearance of men receiving aesthetic procedures may be due to failure to consider the aesthetic differences between the male and female face. Therefore, it is imperative that a plastic surgeon understands the aesthetic difference between attractive male and female faces as the demand for aesthetic procedures among men is increasing. <Image 1> shows comparison between an averaged attractive female face and male face.
