    The third is selenium dioxide (SeO2), an oxide present basically in the form of mineral that is highly toxic to the skin, respiratory organ, etc.

     

    The fourth is selenite which is produced as selenium dioxide from volcanoes reacts with water.

     

    Selenium in the form of selenious acid or sodium selenite is the inorganic selenium currently used as medicinal products (Figure 4).

     

    Lastly, selenate occurs naturally in weakly acidic water. As with sulfuric acid, selenate has a very strong acid property.

    Organic selenium is a form in which selenium is combined with amino acid.

     

    In particular, selenium takes the place of sulfur in cysteine and methionine, which are sulfur-containing amino acids.

     

    Therefore, the three most representative types of organic selenium are selenocysteine, methylselenocysteine, and selenomethionine (Figure 5).
