• #8-3. History and Current Trends of Short Thread Lift in Japan

Therefore, a three-dimensional approach may bring better results. With age, deep cheek fat pads and superficial fat tissues go out of alignment. This is why the superficial fat tissues need to be lifted and anchored onto deeper tissues.

I use the technique of inserting multiple strands of thread into the superficial fat and anchoring the superficial and deep fat pads for lifting effect. I push the patient’s superficial fat layer upward with my finger and insert the needle directly into the deep fat pads to fix the superficial and deep layers together as in a skewer.

Inserting 5-6 strands until the two layers are firmly joined and superficial fat becomes fixed onto the deep fat.

Many Japanese doctors continue to perform techniques that fall out of trend. The short thread lift can have varying efficacy depending on the doctor’s skills. Many new techniques of this procedure are still being developed.

Since introduction of short thread lift in Japan, various types of thread lift became more widely performed in Japan. This led to increased use of cogged or coned threads. Patients are still hesitant about new treatments but it is interesting that the new trend towards thread lift is mostly led by doctors’ enthusiasm for this type of treatment.

The short thread lift is an innovative new thread lift technique developed in Korea. Other new devices and techniques developed in Korea have been introduced in Japan following their success in Korea. However, the short thread lift is special as it was developed exclusively by Korean doctors and became very popular throughout Japan due to media attention. It was an opportunity for Japanese doctors to acknowledge the expertise of Korean doctors and actively learn from them.

Controversy exists over the advantages and disadvantage of this procedure. But it would be fair to say that it served as a turning point for the Japanese aesthetics market.

In another example, the ‘water glow injection’ developed in Korea once became very popular in Japan. The device used in this procedure became widely used. The aesthetic industry and specialists of Japan now pay close attention to new developments in Korea and seek out a good time to introduce them to Japan.

For some time now, I have been visiting Korea to collect information. And my visits have become more frequent in the past few years. Manufacturers also ask me to evaluate new techniques and devices that are developed in Korea.
