While there are so many examples in existence of which grace, I’ll share an example coming from a well recognized book and movie, Les Miserables. Anyone named Jean Valjean is released from prison after having served a 19 year sentence. He will be repeatedly refused shelter with the night, until he is warmly welcomed by the bishop, Monseigneur Myriel. Jean Valjean has done absolutely nothing to generate bishop’s favor it is every bit due to the bishop’s kindness that Valjean finds lodging. Valjean, however, repays his host’s hospitality by stealing his silverware and running away. Valjean is later caught with the police and brought back to your bishop. The police imagine that the bishop will press charges, however the bishop declares that your silverware had been a gift and therefore Jean Valjean has promised to reform, that they later does, and procedes commence a factory which brings prosperity to your town. Jean Valjean doesn’t promise to fix his ways if given something special. Instead, he is touched with the undeserved kindness, mercy, and favor that your bishop “graces” upon him and it’s due to this act of kindness, that Valjean changes. This is a great illustration of the verse in the Bible saying God’s kindness triggers repentance. I prefer the material translation which states it by doing this: “God is kind, but he’s not soft. In kindness he takes us firmly by your hand and leads us in a radical life change” (Romans 2:4). God’s hand is outstretched to any or all by an action of His mercy and grace, however only some elect to grab a hold of it and let Him lead.
