    *Stage 2: Catagen Stage

This is the stage where germinal matrix discontinues hair production.

As the hair follicle growth stops, cell division is ceased and shows rapid decline. In other words, the hair follicles are broken down, which in turn slows down both metabolic process and growth.

Keratin is not produced in this stage.

The bulb of hair shrinks and is separated from dermal papilla, and the hair ascends gradually to upper part of hair follicle.

The catagen stage lasts 1-3 weeks, and usually, 1-3% of the hair follicles on entire scalp are in the catagen stage.

    *Stage 3: Telogen Stage

It is a period of inactivity after catagen stage. In telogen stage, dermal papilla, which plays an important role in hair growth, shrinks and stops functioning.

The hairs, which fall out while being brushed or dried by a hair dryer, are all in the telogen stage.

The telogen stage usually lasts about 3 to 6 months, and the hair in this stage accounts for about 5 to 15% of all hairs. After the telogen anagen stage begins again from the bottom of the hair follicle.

There are approximately 100,000 hair follicles in the adult scalp, 90% of which are in the anagen stage and the remaining 10% are in the catagen stage and telogen stage.

Hair is affected by many factors such as age, season, race, physiological factor, stress, disease, etc.
