Laser is a useful tool in the field of plastic surgery and can help overcome the limits of the surgical method. Plastic surgeons train in laser to satisfy patients’ needs and expand their expertise. In this article, we will take a look at the types of laser training plastic surgeons receive.

Dr. Soo-young Cho of Cho Cosmetic Clinic explains that “Plastic surgeons were the first to introduce aesthetic laser devices in Korea.” In the early 1980s, Dr. Tae-gwon Lee of Lee Taegwon Plastic Surgery Clinic used aesthetic laser for the first time in Korea. Dr. Cho who once worked as a salaried doctor at Lee Taegwon Plastic Surgery Clinic remembers, “Although Dr. Tae-gwon Lee introduced laser to plastic surgery, aesthetic laser became widespread among aesthetic dermatologists. Plastic surgeons focused more on surgery rather than laser that seemed to lie outside the invasive treatment options.”

Learning laser resurfacing from chemical peeling

Korean plastic surgeons became more interested in laser after Professor Seung-ha Park of Korea University Anam Hospital introduced laser resurfacing. Professor Seung-ha Park still holds ‘Laser Symposium’ and continues his efforts to give laser a bigger role in the field of plastic surgery. Thanks to such efforts by Professor Park, a leading authority on laser in Korea, the Department of Plastic Surgery of Korea University Anam Hospital offers more systematic training programs for laser surgeons compared to other university hospitals. Professor Eul-sik Yoon who specializes in laser treatment at this hospital says “Laser was brought into our department after Professor Park trained in laser resurfacing techniques in the US.”

“During my residency, our hospital was the first to introduce UltraPulse, a CO₂ laser to the department of plastic surgery in Korea. Laser resurfacing was performed on the basis that it had less side effects than chemical peeling. Symposiums on laser resurfacing were held at Korea University Anam Hospital. As a trainee at the time, my knowledge on laser grew while preparing for these symposiums.”
