Coffea Arabica
Coffea arabica is one of the most commonly consumed beverages around the world. Coffee beans take on antioxidant effects after being roasted. For maximal antioxidant action, coffee beans are harvested before they are fully ripe. Coffee contains polyphenol components such as chlorogenic acid, proanthocyanidin, quinic acid and ferulic acid.
Coffeeberries reduce reactive oxygen species and has stronger antioxidant action than green tea, pomegranate extract and vitamin C or E. polyphenol can be found in coffee beans, green tea, black tea, various vegetables, fruits and grains and has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant actions in the human body.

Grape Seed Extract
Grapes, Vitis vinifera, are consumed all over the world, in particular in the form of wine. Grape seed extract is rich in proanthocyanidin, which belongs to the polyphenol flavonoid family. Grape seed proanthocyanidin (GSP) is oligomer, polyhydroxy flavan-3-ol unit polymer [(+)-cathecin, (-)-epicathecin] and is rich in the polyphenol of red wine. About 70% of polyphenol exist in grape seeds.
Many studies have shown the antioxidant actions of grapes. Grape seed extract is a free radical scavenger more powerful than vitamins C and E. Oral intake of GSP has been shown to inhibit UV-induced cancer in a mouse study. Mittal et al found that ingestion of GSP reduced the size of tumor and inhibited photocarcinogenesis in SKH-1 hairless mice.
In an experiment, GSP markedly inhibited lipid peroxidation induced by UV or Fe3+, confirming an antioxidant mechanism of GSP’s photoprotective action. It not only prevented UV-induced lipid peroxidation, protein oxidation, and DNA damage but also scavenged hydroxyl radicals and superoxide anion. It inhibited UV-driven loss of protective mechanism such as GPX, catalase, superoxide dismutase, and glutathione.
Grape seed extract contained in cosmetic products contribute to antiaging effects and are widely used as an organic ingredient. However, the effect of cosmetic products containing grape seed extract should be more extensively studied.
