• #4-1. Placenta Nutrition Therapy (PNT)

In this article, I would like to discuss placenta nutrition therapy (PNT) which is effective when used alone or in combination with vitamin megadosing, Myer’s cocktail, or Dr. Son’s cocktail. Japan was the first in the world to approve PNT for medical use. The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare of Japan approved Melsmon in 1956 for treatment of menopausal disorders and hypogalactia and Laennec in 1959 for use in liver cirrhosis. PNT was first introduced in Korea in 1993 as Laennec started being imported. Melsmon entered the Korean market in 2003.

The use of PNT continued to increase but went through a temporary pause in growth due to fear of infection and negative image created from misleading advertising. However, as more research produced positive reports on PNT, the medical professionals started to look at PNT as a treatment option. Countries that currently use the placenta as a medicinal ingredient include Korea, Japan, China, as well as Germany, Spain, Italy, France, Switzerland, and Russia, etc.

There may be many reasons other than the scientific data for the recent popularity of PNT. However, I believe the most important reason is the changed perception of medical services in the modern society. Along with the aging population, rising economic status have changed the way we live as well as fanned our desire to stay healthier and younger. The role of medicine is changing as people no longer just want to avoid diseases but actively seek out ways to maintain optimal health.

As mentioned earlier, the intravenous nutrition therapy (IVNT) is also becoming popular for the same reasons. From treating illnesses, the medical needs are moving towards rejuvenation, and enhancing health.

For an example, let’s look at the vicious cycle of the medical toxicity. Continued exposure to noxious environmental factors such as pollution, alcohol consumption, smoking, and instant foods, etc. stress the liver and push the liver cells to the stage of functional insufficiency. The oxidization of cells continues due to exposure to reactive oxygen species and various problems such as inflammation and pain, etc. begin to surface. The patient resorts to medication to alleviate the symptoms, which increases the permeability of the intestinal mucosa and promotes the absorption of toxins. And this, in turn, further stresses the liver cells. IVNTs can be used to provide anti-oxidants, detoxification, and promotion of metabolic responses, etc. can be used to stop this vicious cycle. Let us now take a look at PNT, which is a major modality of providing essential nutrition.

    The placenta

The placenta is an organ that temporarily forms in the uterus during pregnancy. It serves to work as various organs for the fetus. It is a circular organ that locates where the amnion connects to the uterus and is formed from joining the pars materna and pars fetalis. The placenta is complete within the first 12-16 weeks of pregnancy and continues to grow to be about 14-20cm in diameter, 2-3cm in thickness and 500g in weight towards the final stage of the trimester.
