The slightly unfamiliar photosensitizer Indole-3-Acetic Acid (IAA) is an auxin, which is a plant growth hormone.
Another type of PDT therapy that has recently received a lot of attention in research papers is the PTD using IAA. This type of PTD has an antibiotic effect, sebum secretion inhibition and anti-inflammatory effect, and helps prevent pores clogging.
It can be used for treatment of acne of both non-inflammatory and inflammatory lesions. Very few side effects have been reported and the application time is relatively short (15~30 minutes).
The reactive light is mainly green (520nm) or blue. However, there are very few products available for clinical settings and they are not easy to find.
When the IAA solution is manufactured directly, the IAA does not dissolve in water, and it is therefore dissolved in alcohol and diluted to obtain the appropriate density before use. Concentrated IAA solution is characterized by strong smell.
When it is applied in actual treatments, it produces weak results compared to ALA or MAL with an effect comparable to scaling.
Since there are reports that this method is effective for acne as well as for seborrheic dermatitis, it has also been used as a treatment for patients with seborrheic dermatitis.

Here we have briefly introduced four drugs that can be used in clinical settings. When the author performed actual treatments in clinical settings with an application time of 30 minutes, the traditionally used ALA and MAL treatments showed the greatest results, followed by chlorophyll. IAA showed the lowest effectivity.
ALA and MAL sometimes cause side effects, such as tingling, red spots, pustules, dandruff or hyperpigmentation, after treatment. When pustules occur, antibiotics must be administered and they must be carefully extruded. In case of side effects, such as tingling, red spots, or dandruff, mild steroid ointment can be helpful.
The results of chlorophyll or IAA are relatively weak, but side effects, such as pain or pigmentation after treatment, rarely occur. It is important to fully explain the potential side effects of the treatment to the patient in advance, and if proper treatment is administered for any potential side effects, the PDT therapy can be performed without much difficulty.
