In case of Jessner’s peel, the peeling depth depends on the pre-treatments of the skin before peeling (peeling administered prior to the treatment, use of resorcinol ointment), on the thickness of corneum, skin sensitivity, number of solution applications, the application method, etc. Before applying the Jessner’s solution, it is necessary to cleanse the area using alcohol swabs to remove excess oil.

For acne treatment, one or two layers of the modified Jessner’s solution are usually applied, and in a case of thick or oily skin, or thick keratin, three of four layers might be required. When one or two layers of the Jessner’s solution are applied, patients may complain of tingling symptoms and light erythema may appear on skin. The lumpy white powder of the salicylic acid, one of the Jessner’s solution’s ingredients, can sometimes be observed on the surface of the skin. Such application is a very light peel and dead skin cell flakes appear and peel off two or three days later.

When applying an additional coat for a stronger peeling effect, it is necessary to first evaluate the patient’s response for 5 minutes, and then one or more further layers can be applied. When additional layers of the Jessner’s solution are applied, the solution penetrates more deeply into the skin and causes darker erythema and sometimes white frost on the skin. At this stage, many patients feel more severe tingling and burning. Patients will experience severe skin peeling for 3 to 7 days after the treatment and many complain of dry skin and erythema.

After the treatment by the Jessner’s peel, patients must use a mild moisturizer and apply sunblock. In cases where patients feel acute irritation and have severe erythema, steroid ointment is prescribed and applied two to three times a day. An ointment containing a resorcinol agent should be used for approximately two weeks, and additional different peels or scrubbing must be avoided. Peeling can be conducted in the intervals of two to four weeks.
