What are characteristics of a traditional Korean beauty?
A study published in Korean Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Journal in 2004 presented a comparative analysis between faces of Buddha depicted in Goryo era paintings and those depicted in Joseon era paintings of beautiful women in terms of physical anthropology (J Korean Soc Aesth Plast Surg. Vol 10, No. 1, 25-31, 2004).

Figure 5. Painting of a beautiful woman from Joseon era.
As shown in the above Figures, this study examined facial ratios of various points. The authors found that all measurements of the Buddha’s face were similar to those of a woman’s face in the Joseon era painting, except for the droopy ear lobes, long, upward slanted eyes, and thick lips. This indicates that what our ancestors considered a beautiful female face coincides with the features commonly found in a Buddha’s face from the Goryo to Joseon eras. However, this is quite different from what is considered an attractive female face in the modern days.

Characteristics of an Attractive Female Face
Distinction between Southern Mongoloid and Northern Mongoloid races
I became interested in the distinction between Southern Mongoloid and Northern Mongoloid races after attending a lecture by Dr. Yong-jin Cho of Face Research Institute. I think this is an important aspect to consider when performing aesthetic procedures. The facial features of Southern Mongoloids and Northern Mongoloids can be summarized as below.
