Girls’ Generation are leading girl group singers who introduce K-Pop’s popularity around the world, The popularity and trend are called ‘The Korean Wave’, which named “Hallyu”, . Korean marketers voted Girls’ Generation as the most favorable endorser of brands. Jessica of Girls’ Generation was voted number 45 among Annual Independent Critics List of the 100 Most Beautiful Faces by TC Candler in 2011.2 In the 2013 list, Nana of Orange Caramel came 2nd, Tae Yeon of Girls’ Generation 9th, Suzy of Miss A 14th, Jessica of Girls’ Generation 20th, and Hye-gyo Song (Korean actress) 24th. This indicates that the faces of Korean celebrities are recognized as beautiful around the world. However, different faces are preferred in different countries. Such differences were shown in a survey on attractiveness of each of Girls’ Generation’s nine members; Tae Yeon, Jessica, Sunny, Tiffany, Hyo Yeon, Yoo Ri, Soo Young, Yoon A, and Seo Hyun.

In September 2009, an internet survey of 1,139 Korean respondents found that Koreans generally saw Yoon A’s face as the most attractive followed by Jessica, Yoo Ri, Tae Yeon, Seo Hyun and Tiffany. I measured the attractiveness of each of 9 members using BAPA, my face analysis software (the results may be less accurate as standardized images were not used). The results selected Yoo Ri as the most attractive, followed by Yoon A, Jessica, Seo Hyun, Tae Yeon, Tiffany, Hyo Yeon, Soo Young and Sunny, which were very similar to the survey conducted in Koreans. An internet survey of 16,688 Japanese respondents found Yoon A’s face the most attractive, followed by Yoo Ri, Tiffany, Tae Yeon, Jessica, and Seo Hyun, showing similar preferences as Koreans.
However, the results of an internet survey conducted in France were different. Hyo Yeon who was not a top favorite in Korea and Japan was voted the most attractive in France. Jessica, Tae Yeon, Yoo Ri and Soo Young followed in this order. Yoon A who was seen as the most attractive in Korea and Japan was voted the last in France. This shows that the types of faces regarded as attractive differ quite a lot based on the country and ethnicity.
