Uses of autologous fat breast augmentation

Autologous fatbreast augmentation refers to the surgical procedure where autologous fat transplantation is used for breast enlargement.

Autologous fat is transplanted in the subcutaneous fat layer and fat under the mammary duct. If fat is maintained for 6 months afterengraftment, it becomes a part of the breast tissues and the volume is maintained.

Another way to use this procedure is to transplant fat around the implant for more natural outline of the breast in patients experiencingunnatural breast outlines after previous implant breast augmentation. I call this technique “donut technique,”as autologous fat is transplanted around the implant in a donut-like ring.

This is recommended in patients with insufficient fat deposits or very thin patients. Recently, autologous fat breast augmentation can be used to restore the natural shape of the breast in breast cancer patients after mastectomy.

In summary, autologous fatbreast augmentation includes; 1. autologous fatbreast augmentation, 2. Donut breast augmentation technique whereautologous fat is placed around the implant, and 3. Post-mastectomy breast restoration in patients with breast cancer.

What shoud you look for in patient selection?

For autologous fatbreast augmentation to be successful, the patient needs sufficient fat depositsin their body. In my experience, fat distribution is more important than the amount of fat. Patients with sufficient thigh area fat are ideal candidates.

In some Korean women, the lower limbs develop more than the breast during puberty and this type of patients are the most ideal for this procedure. Upper arm or abdominal fat can be also used besides the thigh area in some cases but harvesting is more difficult in these areas.

About 800cc of fat needs to be harvested in a single donor site for purification.I advise only experienced liposuction experts to try this technique. Various safety issues including donor site indentation can arise when a surgeon inexperienced in liposuctiontries this procedure.
