Type of Calf Contouring Surgeries

 

In this issue, as a case report to be published in the 'Journal of Cosmetic medicine', a case where calf muscles' contracture and deformity occurring as side effects after two-time calf reduction procedures were treated using stem cells is dealt with.

 

The calves are a cylindrical part of the body which consists of fat and muscles.

In response to many Korean women‘s strong desire to reshape their own calves by reducing their thickness, Korean cosmetic surgeons have performed a variety of calf contouring surgeries, such as calf liposuction and calf muscle reduction, since a decade ago.

 

Type of calf reduction procedures is largely divided into calf reduction by muscle resection, which cuts a portion of the calf muscle directly, and calf reduction by nerve blocking, which selectively detects and then blocks the nerves supplied to the gastrocnemius and soleus muscles.

 

I have performed calf reduction by selective nerve blocking since 2007. This procedure delivers micro electric stimulus to detect the calf nerve and delivers high frequency to the tip of the 21G needle.

Further, it involves coagulating the nerve within the radius, with temperature of the high-frequency tip at 95℃ and the coagulation radius of 5mm. In recent years, I have treated a great deal of side effects specific to calf contouring surgeries such as calf nerve blocking.
