As Brazil nuts have recently gained popularity as a good source of nutrients on the Internet or home shopping network, the public's interest in selenium has also risen.

Consequently, this issue introduces selenium, of which importance has come to the fore among minerals with antioxidant effects, in detail.

In particular, the difference in mode of use between organic selenium contained in Brazil nuts, etc. and inorganic selenium used as an injection needs to be clearly understood before its clinical application.

    History

Selenium was firstly discovered by Jöns Jacob Berzelius, a Swedish chemist, in 1817.

It was named after Selene that stands for goddess of the Moon in Greek.

It was until 1957 that selenium was classified as a toxic substance as its excessive intake could lead to onset of toxicity.

After Klaus Schwarz, a German physician, reported the lower incidence of liver cirrhosis in rats eating selenium-containing feeds than comparators in 1957, selenium became recognized as an essential micronutrient.

In addition, its antioxidant effect was demonstrated by Hoekstra (the U.S.) and Flohё (Germany) in 1973.

In 1978, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) eventually evaluated selenium as an essential nutrient and set its recommended daily allowance (RDA) at 50 to 200㎍ (1㎍ = 0.001g).
