Selenoprotein is a protein containing organic selenium and is also called selenoenzyme because it usually serves as an enzyme.

More than approximately 35 selenoproteins have been currently revealed.

Major selenoproteins containing selenocysteine include glutathione peroxidase (GSHPx), thioredoxin reductase, selenoprotein P, and iodothyronine deiodinase.

Tissue distribution of these selenoproteins is as shown in <Figure 6>.

Functions of Selenium in the Human Body

Like vitamin C, a small quantity of selenium has an anti-oxidant effect, whereas excess selenium has a pro-oxidant effect.

Therefore, the usually recommended maximum dose of selenium for promotion of health is 200ug, and 400ug or more is recommended when it is used to stimulate the necrosis of cancer cells in cancer patients.

In general, selenium is known to have multiple functions involving anti-cancer, anti-aging and anti-viral effects as well as immune activation, prevention of cardiovascular diseases, and improvement of brain function.

Additionally, selenium is drawing much attention from infertility clinics as it is effective in increasing sperm motility (Figure 7).
