Finasteride treatment is indicated in young and middle-aged adults, but its therapeutic effect can also be anticipated in the elderly.
For the treatment of hereditary hair loss, finasteride is recommended to be taken steadily during and even after treatment.
Discontinuation of administration may lead to recurrence of hair loss after 3 to 6 months.
Finasteride is contraindicated in women of childbearing potential (WOCBP).
Administration of finasteride in women of WOCBP may be at risk for fetal teratogenesis, whereas administration of finasteride in their spouse (husband) is unrelated to the risk of fetal teratogenesis.
Females irrelevant to pregnancy such as postmenopausal women can take this medicine after consultation with a medical specialist.
Adverse effects may occur in 2 to 3% of finasteride-treated males and include impotence, sexual dysfunction, decreased ejaculation, and gynecomastia.
In the event of any relevant symptom, treatment withdrawal leads to recovery within weeks in most cases.
