• [Interview] Strong anatomical knowledge can reduce side effects and improve outcome I

President of Penta A, a soon to be launched, Korea’s first academic society for cadaver practicum, Dr. Shin Samshik of Clear Skin & Laser Clinic

Dr. Shin Samshik of Clear Skin & Laser Clinic spent KRW 5 million each time he attended a cadaver practicum course in foreign conferences held in Singapore and Thailand etc. On top of the cost, he also had to leave his practice for many days but he did not find the courses always satisfactory. Dr. Shin still kept attending overseas cadaver courses because practical anatomical knowledge is very important for doctors specializing in aesthetic procedures.

This is why Dr. Shin is trying to establish an academic society for human anatomy practicum. The society will be called Penta A, standing or the five As in ‘Anti-aging Aesthetic Anatomy Association Academy’. Penta A is Korea’s very first academic society for anatomy practicum. The society has its roots in a small gathering that started 3 years ago. Now that gathering has expanded to a national academic society that will hold its first seminar in this December.

“Penta A will be an academic society for studying anatomy through fresh cadaver dissection. Attendants will get a valuable opportunity to get a first-hand look at the actual vascular structures, as well as location and forms of the nerves, muscle and fat tissues, etc. Even a seasoned doctor can gain greater benefits from cadaver practicum than from books. Combining practical knowledge gained from anatomy practicum with clinical experience and knowhow can greatly enhance the quality of aesthetic treatment. This is the philosophy behind founding Penta A.”

However, cadavers, the very backbone of Penta A, are hard to come by in Korea.

“The aesthetic medicine market of Korea is considered quite large when compared to its counterparts around the world. This means that the Korean doctors have excellent surgical skills. However, doctors from around the world gather in Singapore or Thailand to take cadaver courses. These countries can relatively easily bring stained cadavers from the US. On the other hand, due to cultural reasons, donation of cadavers is rare in Korea and many limitations lie in bringing cadavers from other countries. My hope is that purchase of cadaver heads become easier to allow more anatomical studies in the field of aesthetic medicine.”
