Plastic Surgeon with Successful B to C Cosmetic Business, Dr. Kim Sam of Samskin Plastic Surgery

“Sam.K products sold at major retail outlets will win customer satisfaction”

Doctors are venturing into the ever growing cosmetics market. Most large dermatologist chains have their own skin care brand. One plastic surgeon stands out among his peers for his exceptional success in the cosmetics market. It’s Dr. Kim Sam of Samskin Plastic Surgery. He has led a successful cosmetics business for the past 15 years and looks to a new goal.

“Plastic surgery is closely related to dermatology. Plastic surgery has the benefit of expertise in the deeper anatomy of the skin. I often encounter patients with sensitive skin who experience post-surgical swelling or scars. I saw the need for a topical product for relieving complications of the skin and decided to develop products specializing in post-treatment skin care. I thought vitamin C would be effective in these patients. Vitamin C has powerful antioxidative actions and promotes cross-linking of collagen, a major component of the bone, skin, muscle and blood vessels. It is an ideal ingredient for a cosmetic product with its wound healing, anti-aging, and whitening effects, etc. However, vitamin C is water-soluble and gets dissolved and diluted in water. Through research, we developed double coating technology that stabilizes vitamin C in water for over 2 years. We patented this technology and commercialized it into skin care products.”

A plastic surgeon may be familiar with skin anatomy but may still face many difficulties to developing his own cosmetic brand. For these reasons, most doctors who have their own cosmetic business contract an OEM and do not get directly involved in the R&D process. However, Dr. Kim is directly involved in the R&D part of this business.

“My specialty is plastic surgery but I also have a doctorate degree in biochemistry. This helps me get more involved in the technical process. My doctoral thesis was on skin culture and I tried to apply this technology to plastic surgery in burn care or reconstruction. But I found that it could be applied more easily in the cosmetics. I hear many doctors lend their name to cosmetics manufacturers but I wonder how deeply they get involved in product development. Launching a skin care line with your name without concerns for the product quality could hurt the reputation of all cosmetic brands launched by doctors.”
