• [Person Of the Month] Focusing on latest trends in plastic surgery including thread, filler procedures and stem cell therapy II

“Live demonstrations are difficult for conferences on reconstructive or major invasive procedures that require high-risk techniques such cutting bones, etc. However, minimally invasive procedures are quick and causes little bleeding or scarring, making them easy to give demonstrations on. Moreover, live demonstrations are particularly useful in this field. For example, as fillers can be injected in many different ways, it is difficult to improve clinical skills just from theoretical learning. As unexpected situations arise in live demonstrations just as in actual clinical settings, beginners can take a first-hand look at the gritty reality of treatment. We started offering live demonstrations from last spring to very good response from our members. We plan to make this an essential part of our symposiums.”

Dr. Kyun Tae Kim expressed his ambitions for the research society.

“Many patients are visiting Korea from China and other Asian countries due to the power of Hallyu (Korean waves) and Korea’s excellent plastic surgery technology. I do ,however, have one worry as the director of eye and nose resurgery center at our hospital. Cases of Korean patients receiving resurgery is on the decline but side effects are increasing with Chinese and other Asian patients. This is due to inexperienced doctors performing procedures in Korea or abroad. Side effects also arise from the patient’s inadequate post-treatment care or their pre-existing physical conditions. Nevertheless, procedures performed according to proven concepts are less likely to cause side effects. Resurgery can be carried out without much difficulty if correct anatomical considerations are given but increase in resurgeries will bring down the reputation of Korea’s plastic surgeons. The field of medicine will only play a larger role in the growth of the overall economy. Plastic surgery, in particular, is at the forefront of such growth. I hope the Minimal Invasive Plastic Surgery & Dermatology Research Society will play a key role in further enhancing the field of plastic surgery both in and outside Korea.”

Strategies for small private practices struggling against large hospitals

Dr. Kyun Tae Kim’s Mega Plastic Surgery is not a large hospital but it boasts skilled doctors who have come together to share expertise in their respective fields. Lastly, Dr. Kim offers his advice for other smaller practices who struggle in competition with large hospitals with funds and a large pool of patients.

“Private practices can stay successful if they select a field of specialty and offer unique expertise. Large hospitals are gradually being ranked and weeded out based on their reputation, credibility and quality of treatment. Continuous investment in medical facilities and employee training will keep the patient satisfaction high and build a good reputation.”

Dr. Kyun Tae Kim of Mega Plastic Surgery predicts that anti-aging treatments will be the mainstream of aesthetic market in the near future.
