The Association of Minimal Invasive Plastic Surgery runs a series on fillers, botulinum toxin and thread lift in collaboration with D&PS. Articles included in the series will be updated and published in a book. We interviewed the leading columnist of each treatment and discussed their choice of topics and line-up of writers, etc.
Lead columnist on fillers, Dr. Ki-woong Hong of Samskin Plastic Surgery
Articles on fillers are written by the lead columnist Dr. Ki-woong Hong of Samskin Plastic Surgery as well as Dr. Heung-soo Jung of Midam Plastic Surgery, Dr. Sung-han Nam of Clara Plastic Surgery Clinic, Dr. Dong-hyun Ahn of Daeyoung Plastic Surgery Clinic, Public health specialist Yong-woo Lee, Hyung-ik Pak of Hamimi Plastic Surgery, and Dr. Sun-woo Lee of Dr. Lee’s Aesthetic Clinic. Dr. Hong will cover introduction and treatment techniques of dermal filler injection.
“Most of the discussions on fillers so far have focused on medical aspects, such as the injection site and depth for minimizing side effects for volumizing and wrinkle reduction outcomes. However, a larger variety of fillers have become available and the wider choices of ingredients are changing the use of fillers from just providing volume to giving a new shape to the overall face. Combination with thread lift or laser, etc. make up the new total approach to aesthetic treatment. Patients can now visit the plastic surgeon on a regular basis to maintain a youthful appearance. The most important aspect to this new approach is the aesthetic definition of an attractive face.”
Dr. Hong defines an attractive face as a likable face.
“The past approaches involved mathematical or graphic concepts such as the golden ratio. But they are outdated and have poor practical application. The new approach draws from psychology and biology and seeks an ideal proportion and balance of the face. A beautiful proportion and balance of the facial features can be intuitively seen by non-experts and are not determined by mathematical measurements. I think an attractive face is one that appears likable and does not have to resemble faces of celebrities. I believe the treatment goal should be natural and subtle adjustments and not drastic, surgical alteration of the original facial features.”
In his column, Dr. Hong will also emphasize safe techniques for minimally invasive procedures.
“As minimally invasive plastic surgery has become popular and widely performed, side effects are also increasing. Even the most severe complications of filler injections such as vision loss or skin necrosis occur more frequently than we expect. It is important to have a strong knowledge of anatomy for improving safety and efficacy.”
Lastly, Dr. Hong will focus on the Harmony Program, a more balanced approach to hospital management and customer service.

“The chef may cook a very delicious meal but if the servers do a poor job of presenting it, the restaurant may end up losing customers. I believe the same principle applies to medical service as well. The staff of the doctor’s office such as nurses and receptionists, etc. are playing a more important role today. The relationship with the patient goes beyond just the treatment and depends on a harmonious relationship between the medical staff and patient. The Harmony Program allows this relationship to be efficient and beneficial. In this program, the patient is provided with a total care including pre-treatment face analysis, consultation, treatment and follow-up. As harmony of facial features is important for a beautiful face, harmony of staff and customer service are also important for a successful and satisfying treatment.”
