    Articles on botulinum toxin

Dr. Nam-ho Kim of Gyalumhan Plastic Surgery

The articles on botulinum toxin will be led by Dr. Nam-ho Kim of Gyalumhan Plastic Surgery. Dr. Jung-ho Yoon of Jewelry Plastic Surgery will cover the introduction. Dr. Kim plans to invite more plastic surgeons to contribute to the botulinum toxin part of the series.

“The topics for botulinum toxin part have been selected and organized. In this column I will cover the history of botulinum toxin, anatomy of facial expression muscles, consultation and treatment techniques, and basic injection and treatment techniques in each area. The interest in botulinum toxin is not as high as in dermal fillers or thread lift. Botulinum toxin has been in clinical application for over two decades and a wealth of scientific data on its actions in the human body have been published. There are not that many new topics that may pique interest. However, Korea was the fourth in the world to develop botulinum toxin A after the US, France and China and boasts three successful manufacturers of this product. I believe Korean plastic surgeons played an important role in making this possible. Recently, indications of botulinum toxin are expanding well beyond wrinkle removal. This column will be a good opportunity to review achievements in the field and explore potential new uses of botulinum toxin.”

Dr. Kim is particularly interested in ‘Body Botox’.

“Body Botox was introduced in New York Times recently. The NY Times article talked about rapidly expanding uses of botulinum toxin to orthodontics, treatment of prostatic hyperplasia, migraine, strabismus, and bruxism, etc. In an innovative new application, endoscopic injection of botulinum toxin into the stomach lowers gastric motility resulting in delayed digestion and reduced appetite. In aesthetic procedures, botulinum toxin is not only used in wrinkles, angular jawline correction, and calf muscles, etc. but extensively applied to trapezius muscles. It is combined with dermal filler injections in overall facial contouring. The use of botulinum toxin is continuously evolving to newer areas.”

Dr. Kim has developed a unique technique called “Smile Botox.”

“Smile Botox corrects the gummy smile with excessive exposure of the upper gum to a more natural smile using botulinum toxin injections. Perioral injections require a lot of experience and knowledge of muscle anatomy and I plan to publish a study on this new technique.”
