Developing a photogrammetric facial analyzer program

What are standards of an attractive face? Dr. Rhee Seungchul, Professor of Plastic Surgery, Dongguk University Ilsan Hospital, tried to find an answer to this question.

“Not many doctors have objective aesthetic standards when it comes to analyzing a patient’s face. For the same face, one doctor may recommend rhinoplasty whereas another may recommend cheekbone or eye surgery. Some even uniformly recommend the procedure he or she is most comfortable with. Patients cannot look at their face objectively either. They are unable to pinpoint exactly where corrected is needed for aesthetic improvement. Some patients suffer from body dysmorphic disorder where they obsess over one part of their face or body and receive repeated surgeries to change it. This is why we need scientific and objective standards of attractiveness.”

Dr. Rhee believes that an attractive face has the right balance and proportion between facial features. The most attractive face would have the right balance as well as unique individual features. He came to this conclusion through analyzing the faces of numerous attractive men and women in Korea as well as around the world.

“What is considered attractive keeps changing through time. People pursue contemporary characteristics of beauty. I have developed BAPA (Balanced Angular and Proportional Analysis) program using facial images of famous celebrities and average or attractive people. Using this program, I provided photogrammetric analysis of attractive faces for different races and ethnicities. I did not use absolute values of the measurements of the eye and nose etc. but considered the angle, balance and ratio between facial features to discover common characteristics. Based on these statistical data, I have identified scientific standards of attractiveness for the doctor and patient to determine where surgical correction is needed. That is, they can objectively evaluate the proportion of each facial feature as well as the overall balance using an analytical graphic.”

Dr. Rhee hopes that his new program will help reduce wrongful and unnecessary aesthetic procedures. He believes objective analysis can help the doctor and patient avoid unnecessary and drastic physical alteration.

“It is also important to perform objective self-analysis of one’s face rather than being mislead by aggressive marketing. I created the face analysis program in the hope of dissuading patients from making rash decisions about getting work done on their face. The program is also useful as a diagnostic tool for facial reconstructive surgery for patients with facial deformity.”
