Demand for injectable filler seminars increases

As the chemical properties and ingredients of fillers become more varied, it is very important to choose the correct filler for the patient and treatment area. Depending on the facial region, certain fillers bring better results than others. As the doctor’s role in selecting the right filler becomes important, academic seminars on dermal fillers gained in popularity. Dr. Koh played an important role in making these seminars reality.

“I gave about five lectures on botulinum toxin each month. I started a lecture on fillers as the demand from the audience increased. As injection techniques of botulinum toxin are relatively simple and have already been extensively studied, seminars now have moved onto dermal fillers. Thanks to such academic enthusiasm from Korean doctors, Korea has come to lead the world in the field of minimally invasive plastic surgery and dermal fillers. Techniques in these treatments continue to improve. Currently, Korean doctors participate in international conferences more often as presenters than as audience. Korean doctors should continue their efforts in research before they lose their hard earned lead.”

As the market for fillers is rapidly, many dentists and plastic surgeons specializing in aesthetic treatments are recognizing the importance of dermal fillers. Dr. Koh says it is important to review the advantages and disadvantage of one’s specialty and supplement shortcomings.

“Dermatologists may lack anatomical knowledge of deeper structures and plastic surgeons may lack knowledge of the skin surface. Therefore, dermatologists need to brush up on anatomy and plastic surgeons need to learn about characteristics of the skin. It is also important to closely follow up patients with photographs to study and verify efficacy and safety of fillers and treatment techniques.”

The market for fillers grew based on research and trial and error, however, an increased use of fillers also resulted in a higher rate of side effects. Dr. Koh believes that the future of dermal fillers is still bright.

“Dermal fillers will continue technological improvements. New formulations can be developed to delay elimination to lengthen the duration. Extensive knowledge and experience are needed on the part of doctors to maintain the popularity of dermal fillers.”
