“50% of outpatients treated by HELIOS Ⅲ”
Dr. Na-ra Shin, Director of Jeonju Soonsu Dermatologist, was behind other dermatologists in catching up with ‘laser toning.’ She worked at a large dermatologist’s office in the trend-leading Gangnam but had to relocate to the US for three years. After she returned to Korea, she opened a practice in her hometown of Jeonju and found that laser toning was the new popular treatment. Trends had changed. As she learned about toning later than others, she decided that safety was the most important in treating patients. Safety was the first thing she considered when researching various devices and trying a few of them as she prepared to open her practice. Among different devices, she found HELIOS Ⅱ to meet her value criteria the most. HELIOS II was effective without irritating or damaging the skin.

“HELIOS Ⅱ had good beam quality and as I was not accustomed to laser toning, it was the safest device I could use. Also, I wanted my private practice to be different from other dermatologists. At the time HELIOS Ⅱ used fractional beam and I thought this would appeal to patients more.”
Dr. Shin recently upgraded from HELIOS II used since 2010 to HELIOS III. HELIOS Ⅲ uses dual wavelengths of 1064nm and 532nm in four modes and can treat pigmented lesions of both the dermis and epidermis.
“I had a chance to try the new HELIOS Ⅲ. Patients showed much quicker response with the new device than HELIOS Ⅱ. With the old one, at least three treatments were needed to show visible improvement, whereas only one treatment brought high patient satisfaction. Especially, HELIOS Ⅱ is FR mode (Long Pulse mode) and the tip had to changed for collagen remodeling. I was reluctant to use HELIOS II due to this inconvenience. On the other hand, the tip could be changed by pressing a button with HELIOS Ⅲ. I am very satisfied with the device but if I could as for one more improvement, I would like to be able to treat without having to change the tip. However, this would be difficult to achieve as the wavelengths are completely different.”
Based on the success of HELIOS Ⅲ, she has gravitated to HELIOS series to treat many patients.
“The HELIOS series uses a 532nm tip which is useful in focused treatment of local pigments. For this reason, I have switched to HELIOS devices in patients formerly treated with Nd:YAG laser or IPL. It is easy to operate and has little risk of side effects with excellent response. Previous devices tacked only toning but now you can perform rejuvenation and melasma removal procedures as well with a single device.”
Dr. Shin does not solely rely on the high performance of the device. She has established 1:1 patient care system in which each patient has a designated consultant. We meets with consultants every week to learn details of patients’ progress and conditions.
“Post-treatment care is very important in toning treatments. We check each patient’s habits. We provide consultation on cosmetic products, sunscreen, and oral vitamin C supplements.”
She also provides fundamental treatments that restores the health of cells such as whitening treatment simultaneously with laser procedures. Combination of treatments shortens the treatment period. She also has a secret ampoule that she uses to heighten the effect.
“Various ampoules are used after toning treatment; Vitamin C, placenta, V serum, and T serum, etc. They are used in post-treatment care.”
Dr. Shin says she is not interested in other laser devices. She brings maximal outcome with appropriate laser treatment and personal post-treatment care. She says she will focus on improving effect with current devices rather than following market trends. HELIOS Ⅲ is at the very center of her such efforts.
