A rise in the number of hair loss patients

 

Recent years have witnessed an increase in hair loss patients, regardless of age and gender, in contrast to the past when hair loss was considered as a disease occurring only in middle-aged men.

 

In particular, the number of young people and women affected by hair loss is rapidly increasing.

In Korea, population with hair loss is estimated at approximately 10 million.

 

According to the data published by the National Health Insurance Corporation, approximately 7 million people suffer from hair loss, and the population with potential hair loss is estimated at 3 million.

 

This suggests that 1 in 5 people are suffering from hair loss.

In 2016, the hair loss market was worth KRW 4 trillion, which represents about 10-fold increase from the level recorded in 2004.

 

According to the data from the Health Insurance Review & Assessment Service, the cost incurred from hair loss treatment increased by 30.6% from KRW 27.2 billion in 2012 to KRW 35.5 in 2016.

 

While the proportion with hair loss patients is increasing, the age of people with hair loss is decreasing.

 

Therefore, it would be wise to recognize hair loss as a disease emerging from the complicated social structure of contemporary society.
