Among them, the most important are genetic factor, male hormone, and age.

Other reasons include poor local blood circulation, mental stress, nutritional imbalance, and excessive seborrhoea.

In other words, interactions between heredity, male hormone, and age induce a bald head.

If a male hormone is absent despite a strong genetic factor, baldness does not occur.

Also, a male hormone never causes baldness in those with no genetic factor.

In the scalp, testosterone binds to 5α-reductase enzyme and then produces dihydrotestosterone (DHT).

This DHT is the main reason for male pattern hair loss.

In the scalp of patients with male pattern hair loss, DHT production increases, and as DHT shortens the anagen phase of hair, the proportion of hair in the telogen phase increases.

If such a hair cycle in which anagen phase for hair is shortened is repeated, hair will become fine and the number of hair in the anagen phase will decrease.

DHT brings about miniaturization of hair follicles in that manner.

In particular, a recently sudden increase in the number of patients with hair loss is considered attributed to the rise of a westernized meat-centered diet which triggers the secretion of male hormones.
